2013 Ludwig Leichhardt 2oz silver proof coin
The Perth Mint celebrated the Bicentenary with the release of a stunning silver commemorative at the start of 2013.
The coin’s reverse portrays Ludwig Leichhardt and a red line superimposed on a map of northeastern Australia, indicating the route of his most famous expedition to Port Essington on the Cobourg Peninsula. As well as The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark, the design includes the inscriptions LUDWIG LEICHHARDT, and the dates 1813 and 1848.
Issued as Australian legal tender, the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the 2013 year-date and the monetary denomination are shown on the coin’s obverse.
Presented in a classic display box within an illustrated shipper, and accompanied by a numbered Certificate of Authenticity, only 2,013 Leichhardt anniversary coins have been released for sale worldwide.
Struck from 2oz of 99.9% pure silver in outstanding quality, the 2013 Ludwig Leichhardt anniversary coin is priced at an affordable $199.00.
To order, visit The Perth Mint online, or call (Australia only, toll free) 1800 098 817 or (international) +61 8 9421 7218.
In Australia, you can also check availability of the release with your local Australia Post outlet or coin dealer.

Ludwig Leichhardt attends coin launch
No, that's not a typo! Ludwig Leichhardt himself accepted The Perth Mint's tribute to his famous ancestor in Berlin at the start of 2013.
At the Australian Embassy's official Australia Day function on 28 January, Ludwig Leichhardt (the younger) joined dignitaries for a sneak preview. The silver coin was given its official global release a few days later, at the World Money Fair in Berlin on 1 February.
