The Southeast Queensland 'Leichhardt Trail'

Let's begin with an overview of Leichhardt's travels in 1843 and 1844 ~ the yellow stars on this map highlight key locations from this time. We're working on making this an interactive map, with links to images and text, and soundfiles of extracts from Leichhardt's diaries, journal and letters, and to tourism websites today. This resource will, we hope, become very 'rich' indeed (once we work out how best to do it!), so be sure to come back and visit; in the meantime, here is a more limited preview of what's in store.

In his explorations in 1843 from his base at Durundur Station (present-day Woodford), Leichhardt roamed north through the ranges as far as Tiaro in the Wide Bay region.  You can find out more about how his memory was honoured in his Bicentenary Year 2013 by clicking here

The map also shows Leichhardt's other key 'bases' in both 1843 and 1844 ~ the station properties at Cecil Plains and Jimbour ~ as well as the route from the latter of his 'great overland expedition' to Port Essington. While we're in the region, the dotted grey line indicates the start of Leichhardt's fateful (and fatal) final journey of 1848, from Cecil Plains homestead out to his last recorded sighting at Mt Abundance, near today's Muckadilla.
